Look for an Evergreen Day is Here!

Look for an Evergreen Day is Here!

It’s Look for an Evergreen Day! You know what that means… it’s pretty much your last chance to snag a live tree for your holiday festivities. Look for an Evergreen Day was originally established by the National Arborist Association to create a day to appreciate the beauty of these trees outside of the confines of merely being bedecked with glittering lights and ornaments. Even in the depths of winter, evergreens keep their foliage, providing that wonderful green and white contrast that is so representative of deep winter. If you already have your tree decorated and on display, take today as an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of these seasonal favorites. Take a walk and feel the difference in the needle types. Bonus points for collecting a few pinecones to create a fun craft with! Don’t have your tree yet? Check out this list for lots of locations available to help you find the perfect tree.Williams Tree Farm, RocktonWilliams Tree Farm has been growing Christmas trees for 70 years at 4661 Yale Bridge Road. A Dining Experience at LimaMar Restaurant

A Dining Experience at LimaMar Restaurant

One element of Rockford that we all love is the variety of amazing restaurants available to us. But if you are a true foodie who feels they have tasted everything Rockford has to offer, let us present LimaMar, a Peruvian restaurant. At LimaMar, your whole visit is an experience. They have an extensive cocktail, wine, and beer list, as well as a unique dining menu for you to explore. We decided to give three courses a try and started our night with Conchitas a la Parmesana, scallops broiled with homemade butter, and parmesan cheese. I am a scallop snob, and I was blown away by the freshness, flavor, and texture of these perfectly cooked scallops. After the appetizer, we tried the Orzo Limeno, tenderloin beef marinated with Nikkei sauce (homemade), and orzo with a creamy aji amarillo sauce (a yellow hot pepper that only grows in Peru). Don’t worry, it wasn’t too spicy, it just added this wonderful warmth to every bite. The beef was tender, and the sauce was the perfect pairing.Of course, we couldn’t end our night without dessert, so we ordered Alfajor Icecream, Peruvian cookies stuffed with caramel, alfajor ice cream, and caramel. Delivered were three butter-style cookie sandwiches with a caramel center, and a very shareable scoop of a scrumptious caramel butter cookie ice cream. It was a delicious end to a unique meal right in downtown Rockford! If you are a more hesitant foodie, I highly recommend visiting their website first. They have pictures of almost all the menu items (including cocktails!). https://www.limamarrestaurant.com/We look forward to our next visit to LimaMar!

The West Side Show Room is Now Showing Peter and the Starcatcher!

The West Side Show Room is Now Showing Peter and the Starcatcher!

The West Side Show Room is known for its cutting-edge storefront-style theater which has been primarily aimed at adults. Now for the first time, they are bringing their highly theatrical brand of entertainment to families. Featuring eleven local actors portraying over 100 unforgettable characters, Peter and the Starcatcher uses live music, ingenious stagecraft, and the limitless possibilities of imagination to bring the story of Peter Pan to life. Based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, Peter and the Starcatcher is an imaginative retelling of the origins of Peter Pan as he escapes his orphanage, battles pirates, discovers Neverland, and learns how to fly. On the decision to expand to the theater’s offerings to families, Artistic Director Mike Werckle says that it was a natural extension of the work the theater has been doing since first opening in 2013. “My background is in film and animation, so I tend to gravitate toward stories that lend themselves to spectacle,” they said. “We had done plays like MilkMilkLemonade, Psycho Beach Party, and Men On Boats which are all highly entertaining and which I think kids would love if the subject matter was a little more appropriate.” In 2020, The West Side Show Room presented a COVID-safe holiday show called The Elf-O-Matic vending machine. Children and their families visited an elf that sang songs and dispensed gifts from the vending machine. Werckle was touched by the reaction of parents and kids alike. “As the kids were laughing and dancing I saw a few parents wipe away tears. The importance of regaining live human interaction during the pandemic really seemed to land on them,” Werckle said. “It was then that I realized that the West Side Show Room has a unique capacity to reach adults and kids alike.” Peter and the Starcatcher opens the day after Thanksgiving and runs through December 12th, 2021. The West Side Show Room is following the same safety protocols that are currently being used by Broadway theaters. “Audience members must wear masks and present proof of vaccination or a negative test at the door,” Werckle said. “With these measures in place, the public can feel safe returning to live theater.” Peter and the Starcatcher opens Nov 26th, 2021 at The West Side Show Room, 1414 N Main Street in Rockford, Illinois. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children, and $15 for students. All tickets are free on Fridays as part of WSSR’s Free Fridays program. To reserve tickets please visit wssr.org.

Try the Burrata at Woodfire!

Try the Burrata at Woodfire!

If you haven't been to Woodfire, stop what you're doing and go there NOW! Their entire menu is to die for, BUT this mouthwatering cheesy, carby concoction holds a very special place in my heart. It's called burrata, and it consists of a bed of deliciously crisp bread, cherry tomatoes, a giant ball of burrata cheese, drizzled in a balsamic glaze and garnished with basil. Honestly, that description alone should be enough for you to want to try it, but the process and the flavor will keep you coming back for more. I know it is traditionally frowned upon to play with your food but there is something so satisfying about slicing into the giant ball of burrata and having its softer creamy insides ooze onto your bread! Burrata is an Italian cow milk cheese made from mozzarella and cream. The outer casing is solid cheese, while the inside contains stracciatella and cream, giving it a soft, buttery texture. Once you've sliced it open with your knife or fork, you then spread the cheesy goodness onto your bread and eat it like a slice of pizza! Oh, and it's a LOT… it's basically the size of a personal pizza so prepare to feel full after this appetizer!Pairing this delicious appetizer with a glass of white wine and a basil pesto pizza made for the perfect indulgent dinner for two! Woodfire's menu is drool-worthy, and the ambiance makes for the ideal spot for any occasion! If you haven't tried it, you NEED to. And if you have tried it, then you know exactly what I'm talking about, and your stomach is probably growling at the memories of all the delicious meals you've eaten there!

We have another food review for you! I’m going to tell you about all of the mouth-watering flavors in the Veggie Panini at DiTullio’s Italian Market and Cafe! Not only is it a warm and delicious meal for a cold fall day, but the flavors will have you coming back all year round! It starts with a base of ciabatta bread that is toasted to perfection, then they slather on their olive spread, giving it that classic Italian taste. Next, they layer on tomato, artichoke, basil, and the best ingredient of all…MOZZARELLA! They pop that in the panini press until the cheese starts to ooze out of the sides in traditional gooey mozzarella fashion. If that sounds delicious, then WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Go try it!If that sounds pretty good, but you think it’s missing a little meat, then don’t worry because DiTullio’s Italian Market and Cafe has a LARGE selection of sandwiches with freshly sliced meats and cheeses. They also have a full deli and market of meats, cheeses, sides, and ingredients for you to shop! So whether you grab a quick lunch or need to pick up delicious fresh ingredients to use at home, DiTullio’s has it all!

Founded during a time that was marked by a revival in patriotism and intense interest in the beginnings of the United States of America. Women felt the desire to express their patriotic feelings and were frustrated by their exclusion from men's organizations formed to perpetuate the memory of ancestors who fought to make this country free and independent. As a result, a group of pioneering women in the nation's capital formed their own organization and the Daughters of the American Revolution has carried the torch of patriotism ever since. Why: Fighting ceased when an armistice between the Allied Nations and Germany went into effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 1918, marking the conclusion of World War I, one of the most destructive and far-reaching wars in human history. June 1, 1954 Congress passed the bill that President Eisenhower signed proclaiming November eleventh as Veterans Day. We come together on this day to honor all those men and women who answered the call to serve our country with bravery and valor. Our freedom is a direct result of their distinguished service.

Meyer's Tails Up Farm's 2021 Christmas at the Farm!

Meyer's Tails Up Farm's 2021 Christmas at the Farm!

The popular local shopping event, Christmas at the Farm has been holiday tradition for the past several years. It’s a festive shopping event hosting several local and unique vendors on site at the Meyer’s location on Irene Road in Belvidere, but last year the event was forced to go on-line due to Covid restrictions. The Meyer’s team is thrilled to announce the return of the live, in-person event again for 2021! Christmas at the Farm is Friday November 5th from 5pm to 9pm and Saturday November 6th from 10am to 4pm. Shoppers will peruse among over 35 unique vendors in the expansive barn and heated tents on the property of Meyer’s Tails Up Farm. “We are so thankful to be back to celebrating the season as it was mean to be…in-person with all the fun and frivolity of finding that perfect gift, listening to live Christmas music, and even indulging in a decadent treat or hot drink by the bonfire,” says Gwen Meyer owner of Meyer’s Tails Up Farm. “But of course, Christmas at the Farm is so much more than a fun weekend of shopping, as a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit Miss Carly’s,” adds Meyer.ABOUT MISS CARLY’S: We are a family in Rockford Illinois that decided to open our dining room table up to feed the hungry and homeless in our neighborhood. Since then, we have grown exponentially, being able to feed as many as 1,000 people a day sack lunches, while still staying small and intimate. We feed people 24/7 right out of our home and meet with people in crisis to troubleshoot their situation offering resources and assistance.   More info at misscarlys.org Admission to the event is $7. Christmas at the Farm will feature: vintage goods, farmhouse finds, handmade treasures, candles & soaps, food, treats, hot drinks and much more!  For more information, please contact: Gwen Meyer at 608-207-5023 or 815-623-9999Or see Facebook.com/Christmasatthefarm
