Join the Rockford Park District’s Natural Areas team in collecting native seeds in the prairie. These seeds will be used to help expand high quality areas within the nature preserve. We will be hiking a bit around the prairie to collect seeds and talking about its rich natural history and current land management practices. This volunteer workday is part of a regular series that will continue year-round to help enhance the natural community within the preserve. Future work will focus on brush control and preparing for a prescribed burn.
Searls prairie is a significant black-soil prairie with 66-acres of remnant dry, mesic, and wet prairie, along with a reconstructed savanna. It contains many rare plant, animal, and insect species and is the only dedicated State Nature Preserve within the City of Rockford.
Tools, snacks, water, and bug spray will be provided. Please wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
Please RSVP to jonidenker@rockfordparkdistrict.org so we know how many tools to bring!
