In 1959, a librarian (Ensemble member Katie Maringer) reluctantly goes to war with an Alabama state senator over a children’s book about the wedding of two rabbits. This blows up into a huge controversy with the librarian (who is a Yankee) accused of peddling a hidden message. Elsewhere, two childhood friends, one white and one black, reconnect as adults and their story serves as a private counterpoint to the public uproar at the State House. This play tackles sensitive issues with smarts, humor, and hope.
