Snowshoe Poker Hike at Klehm Arboretum

Celebrate the natural wonders of winter with a fun and unique outing in a beautiful setting as we head out to Klehm Arboretum for a Snowshoe Hike. Have some fun in the snow, meet some new people, and learn the ins and outs of the fastest growing winter sport.Details: 2 hour adventure starting with some basic instruction where you will learn how to put on and take off your snowshoes, select the proper snowshoes, how to get up from a fall, select a comfortable stride for walking and stomping, and turning around. Then we enjoy a hike around Klehm.As an added twist for this adventure, we are going to play a hand of poker, with the best hand winning a $20 Rocktown Adventures gift card. Here is how this will work. There will be 5 stops along the way. At each stop, a volunteer from Klehm is going to provide some education about the trees at that particular location. You will also receive one card at each stop. 5 stops equals 5 cards!Location: Klehm Arboretum 2715 S Main St, Rockford, IL 61102Price: The price for this adventure is $25 and includes snowshoes, poles, basic instruction, and a guide. For kids needing youth snowshoes (fit shoe sizes ranging from Youth 11 to Adult 5) the price is $10. We can accommodate 24 Adults and 10 Youth for this experience.Register: Please give us a call at 815-636-9066 or sign up online.What to Bring/Wear: Please wear hard sole boots. Soft sole boots do not work in snowshoes. Dress in layers. Water or something to drink for yourself.We need a minimum of 6 participants and the cooperation of Mother Nature to hold the snowshoe event. In the event Mother Nature does not cooperate or we fail to get the minimum amount of participants we will make a decision 24 hrs in advance. We will post on our Facebook Page and call all participants. If we cancel due to weather, you can choose to get a refund or move your reservation to another event.

WINTER ORIENTEERING RACE

FEBRUARY 12 - YAK OFF 6-HOUR WINTER ORIENTEERING RACERock Cut State Park (Northern Illinois ) We are set to host our winter orienteering race on February 12, 2022 in Northern Illinois at Rock Cut State Park. This will be a six-hour orienteering race with racers conquering two orienteering maps. Our long section (about 80%) of the race will be on foot while the other 20% will be in snowshoes (weather permitting). Don't have snowshoes...no need to worry. Rocktown Adventures will be on site with $10 rentals. However, you will want to sign up and reserve your pair, if you need, since we are limited to 40 pairs. NLI will hold the Wander at the Wetland: Full Moon Snowshoe & Hike on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022 at Nygren Wetland Preserve, 3190 W. Rockton Rd., Rockton, Ill., 4:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.This FREE outdoor winter event is for all ages with or without snow. Experience the winter landscape of the prairie and wetland when you take a hike, snowshoe or ski the trail lit by hundreds of luminaries, sponsored by NorthPointe Health & Wellness Campus. You can head out on the trail on your own or follow a tour guide who will tell you about Natural Land Institute and the preserve. Listen to the stillness, or for the call of owls in the distance, watch the sunset in the horizon over the wetland, look for the full moon (if it’s not hidden by clouds) and enjoy exploring this natural area with family and friends.Places to warm up include the winter themed greenhouse and two bonfires.Rent snowshoes on site that night, sponsored by Rocktown Adventures, for a $10 donation per pair to NLI.
