FREE LAUNDRY FOR RPS STUDENTS: The third year of the “Fresh for Learning” program kicked off this afternoon. The program is a collaboration between the Rockford Police Department and the new 5 Alarm Coin Laundry, located at 3939 West Riverside Blvd.

Students from low-income households can do their laundry for free every Wednesday between 4 and 7 p.m. All students need to participate is their school I.D. Rockford Police Department ROCK House Officer Patrice Turner leads the program, which is sponsored by Molina Healthcare of Illinois.

“I was a School Resource Officer for eight years and noticed that truancy was an issue. Kids were actually staying home because they didn’t have a clean uniform,” says Officer Turner. “I started to hand out quarters for them to use at their local laundromat so that they were able to wash their uniforms and not miss school. After doing this for a while, I decided to do it on a bigger scale and ‘Fresh for Learning’ was born.”

5 Alarm Coin Laundry opened in July with the assistance of a City of Rockford Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Small Business Forgivable Loan for $25,000 to purchase equipment.
