Are any of you planting a garden this year? If so, we certainly hope you’ve started! Maybe you’ll get lucky and end up with crops similar in size to what is shown on this postcard from Midway’s Permanent Collection!

This postcard with, “How We Do Things in Rockford” printed towards the top, shows a main with a giant onion in a wheelbarrow. Unfortunately this onion is not true to size (we know, how disappointing!)

A gentleman by the name of Alfred Stanley Johnson Jr. (1863-1932) from Waupun, Wisconsin made a name for himself as a photographer who specialized in “tall-tale” postcards. His images typically showed oversized produce, animals, or unusual scenes with cars. He staged his family and friends into the story lines and added enlarged images of fruits, veggies, and animals to fit into a pre-set background.
