In the spring pine trees have very prominent terminal buds called candles, due to their elongated shape. We ‘candle’ the pines by pruning the new growth. This is done to control the trees growth and create the desired style. Much like bonsai, we are shaping young pines to appear as if they were ancient trees in nature. We have 150 scotch pines that are produced in this manner, so when you visit, you’ll likely see our gardeners up on a ladder creating.
