The Jessica Holt Purchase Award is an important part of the Rockford Art Museum Permanent Collection. The passionate arts advocate, an artist herself, annually provided funding from 1992 to 2000 for the museum to purchase one artwork “by any artist who lived or maintained a studio in the Rockford region for at least one year to encourage and honor local artistic achievement and build the museum’s collection of artwork created by local artists.” The Holt Award coincided with an important moment in the history of the museum; the 1990s marked a resurgence of acquiring artwork for the RAM Collection, and continued its long tradition of championing local artists.

The select group of Holt Award recipients includes Deborah Newton, ‘Red on the Roof I,’ Matthew Herbig, ‘Looking Out One Eye and In the Other: Self-Image No. 60,’ Thad Duhigg, ‘Edge of Intent,’ Betsy Youngquist, ‘Red Wolf to the Rescue,’ Lynn Fischer-Carlson, ‘Processor #5,’ Hugh “Red” Argraves, ‘Cubist City,’ Jim Julin, ‘Flower #7,’ Marlene McCauley, ‘Snake Eyes,’ and John Deill, ‘Trail Ends Marker II.’ Stay tuned for another look into Carrie’s collection soon!
