Anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment by highlighting local women who aided in the Women's Suffrage Movement. With that in mind, here is an extra special #flashbackfriday post!

Julia Lathrop was a leading early twentieth century suffragist, reformer, and advocate for children. She graduated from Rockford Female Seminary (now Rockford University) and Vassar College in 1880, then returned to Rockford to work in her father’s law office. In 1890, she moved to Hull House in Chicago to work with Stephenson County native, Jane Addams. In a March 1, 1959 Morning Star article, Lathrop explained that “she felt she could do more for the cause of suffrage as an example of a woman efficiently handling a difficult position.”
