News worthy news: Thermal paper. Thermal paper is the paper commonly used as the receipt at a checkout counter, such as restaurants or at a retail store. Most thermal receipts have BPA which is the chemical recently banned in water bottles & sippy cups. Thermal receipts do not pulp the same as other paper, so they are NOT actually recyclable and need to go in the trash. Furthermore, BPA remains in the fibers, which we do not want in recycled paper products like paper towels or tissue boxes!

Here’s a quick test to tell you if the paper you’re handling is the thermal type containing BPA: scratch the printed side of the paper. If you see a dark mark, the paper is thermal.

While some manufacturers make “BPA free” thermal paper, they often use a similar chemical (BPS), which also may pose health hazards similar to BPA. Both are easily transferred to skin.
